Design Principles That Convert: What We've Learned Building 100+ Sites

1. Visual Hierarchy Drives Action

Every great converting website has one thing in common — it guides the visitor's eye intentionally. Using size, contrast, colour, and whitespace to create a clear reading order isn't just good aesthetics, it's conversion strategy.

After building over a hundred sites, we've found that most underperforming websites suffer from one of two problems: everything is trying to be equally important, or nothing stands out at all. Both result in visitors leaving without taking action.

The solution is a clear content hierarchy. Your primary headline should communicate the core value proposition immediately. Your secondary elements support that claim. Your call-to-action should be the most visually prominent interactive element on the page.

2. Colour Psychology in Practice

Colour choices affect how visitors perceive your brand before they've read a single word. Warmer colours like amber, orange, and red create urgency and warmth. Cooler colours like blue and green communicate trust and calm.

For service businesses, we consistently find that a warm primary colour paired with strong contrast for CTAs outperforms cooler palettes. The key is consistency — your colour palette should be applied systematically, not randomly.

Contrast is non-negotiable. WCAG AA compliance isn't just about accessibility; high contrast text is simply easier to read, and easier to read means lower bounce rates.
